It all started as a hobby, with a passion and a love for food and fishing. Inspired by the Coromandel Peninsula’s spectacular pristine waters and amazing array of seafood, a group of friends began experimenting with smoking seafood at home. Right from the beginning the green lipped mussels were a clear favorite. Using the traditional methods of smoking by hand with brine, manuka wood smoke and some tasty recipes, resulted in a succulent delicious mussel. So, requests from family and friends began rolling in. The mussels were so popular they thought they would give the local markets a go. It was at a local Coromandel market they were they were approached by bigger companies and started producing for the likes of Foodstuffs.
So Blackbeards Smokehouse was born and to this day is a family run business located in beautiful sunny Whitianga. Blackbeards is still own and run by Renee, and it is important to her that they maintained the integrity of the product. Blackbeard’s mussels are still hand smoked, 100% natural & preservative free, New Zealand’s unique green lipped mussels, a premium artesian product, and you can taste the difference.
